Newstead Echo 100 years ago

February 6, 1918.
People who go picnicking should take care where they light fires in the hot weather we are experiencing.  Two ladies the other day went down to the Vaughan Springs and, not satisfied with the beautiful water supplied by nature, decided they must have their conventional cup of tea.  They lit their fire, and by doing so set fire to the hillside near the springs.  The flames climbed to the top of the hill, but fortunately the grass was very thin on top, and as the wind changed in the right direction the fire died down.
