Arts Open - Meet the Makers

Pictured here outside Dig are two local Newstead artists, Roger McKindley and Karen Pierce with the vibrantly painted ‘Arts Open’ door, heralding the opening of more than 30 studios and galleries throughout the Castlemaine district and ESPECIALLY here in Newstead !

Painters, ceramicists, jewellers, sculptors, print-makers are some of the many and varied artists of our wider community who will share their work and workspaces over the last weekend in April.

You can visit Karen and Roger's studios during the Arts Open weekend.  However if you miss this event, both artists welcome visitors anytime, by appointment – see contact details below:

Karen’s banners and flags decorate the streets during Newstead Live Music Festival, held over the January long weekend, when her studio is always open to the public. Karen’s warm, inviting studio is filled with colourful banners, paintings, props, books and art materials, making it a fascinating insight into the creative process of an artist, with many of her completed and progressing works on display. A beautiful selection of Karen’s quality cards and prints is also available for sale.

Roger’s sculpture and art garden entices the imagination through mystery and a sense of play. Perched above the Loddon River at Newstead, the wide views at this stark but beautiful landscape take in majestic Mount Franklin. Built through severe drought and dramatic flood, the garden is a world of wonder and joy, where broken and discarded objects - iron, stone, wood, glass and bone - are brought together to find new form and meaning. This is studio, gallery and garden combined - constantly changing and growing. There is always something to intrigue and warm the heart. Entry by donation. Commissions welcome.

Roger’s fascinating ‘Antares Iron Art Garden’ will also again be part of the  Castlemaine and District Festival of Gardens 3 - 11 November (over Melbourne Cup Day).
