Walmer to Moolort
I have lived in central Victoria for 20 years and have always been drawn to the landscape between Walmer and Moolort. When you drive that 30 kilometres you travel along two dead straight reads. The first runs north-south along the Muckleford Valley and the second runs east-west along the Moolort Plains. Mount Tarrangower provides a backdrop for both landscapes.
The landscape is flat and unremarkable making the few natural features such as Bald Hill stand out. On the Moolort Plains especially, the sky seems very close to the ground yet bigger than in other more undulating areas. So there are big skies, big clouds and big weather.
Both areas have been extensively cleared for pasture and cropping and there are now only limited remnants of the pre-settlement landscape. Protected roadside vegetation along Muckleford-Walmer Road provides a clue to the gigantic size of the trees including Yellow Box, Grey Box and River Red Gum that used to cover the Valley’s open woodland. Boloke trees were also prevalent in both areas.
The landscape now features old farm buildings, fences, windmills and collections of rocks piled in cairns which have a primal quality. Paradoxically these rock piles are a sign of change for they were collected to make way for canola which is a comparatively new crop in the area.
In these nine photos I have attempted to capture the elemental nature of a changing landscape that holds great beauty for me.
